Step 1
Document Review & Ship Recycling Plan
Ship Recycling depends on multiple factors such as the dimension of the ship, Hazardous materials, etc. The very first phase to conclude whether any ship recycling request is acceptable or not.

Step 2
Ship Inspection and Clearance
Once the acceptance documentation and planning process is accomplished, Ship is approved for recycling. Before beaching it to the Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Facility, Ship is required to be inspected for Hazardous materials as per Gujarat Pollution Control Board, customs, etc. This phase focuses on Documentation clearance and inspection.

Step 3
Arrival of Ship at Ship Recycling Facility
At SRF, Beaching pilot guides port officer for beaching the ship. Port officer will further instruct your ship master for beaching the vessel at high tide end. This hide tide end will be allotted by Port officer. Master needs to follow the sequence of instructions.

Step 4
Decontamination
Decontamination, as the word itself explains, is the process of removing and cleaning vessels from Hazardous material, oil, gases, etc. This is essential because GPCB (Gujarat Pollution Control Board) permits cutting only after inspecting decontamination. Proper Labelling is done as well. We work upon national requirements through suitable ballast water handling techniques. You may check complete details of the process as follows.

Step 5
Dismantling of Ship
The dismantling of the ship is just about dissembling of the ship. All equipment and components are removed from the ship. Vessels with winches are pulled whenever required for safe access and material transportation. All kinds of cutting facilities are delivered.

Step 7
Finalization of the recycling process
The final process is about preparing the reports for each and every activity done on the ship. From request acceptance to complete recycling process reports are required to be managed. Once, the ship is recycled, it is necessary to clean the remaining on SRF. Reporting consists of both incidental reports as well as the final report. Both are them prepared and submitted after cleaning of SRF which concludes finalization of the recycling process.

Document Review & Ship Recycling Plan

Rudra Green Ship Recycling Group | Bhavnagar

This phase comprises of two-stage: Ensuring Acceptance for Ship Recycling and Preparation of ship recycling plan for the individual project In the first stage, the requirements of the client are compared ship with our minimum requirements. Though all kinds of a ship are recycled here. we need to know our availability which is confirmed after knowing complete specification about the dimension and type of ship. We need to know the accessibility of our waste management unit as managing hazardous material is one of the major tasks we need to carry out. Following all international standards, our services may be restricted if any ship recycling standards are violated. If everything appears great, complete specific recycling plan for the request is handed over to the client. In plan preparation, I, II, and III Inventory of Hazardous Material stages are reviewed. This is because we follow IMO guidelines and every execution are defined according to the same. This review helps in complete recycling schedule and considered very sensibly.

Ship Inspection and Clearance

Ship Clearance is the official process directed at Bhavnagar anchorage. The ship can be assigned SRF location after this clearance only. Documents required for clearance of vessels are collected and prepared. Once it reaches to the Bhavnagar anchorage, vessels with Ship agent are lodged. Customs and immigrations verify communication equipment, ROB Bunkers, Crew List, etc. before beaching, it is needed to check last port clearance and other formalities. Every shipmaster declares hazardous material that may exist in cargo specs, deck, accommodation, and engine room. This is verified by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. Once everything is tested customs and GPCB permits ship for arrival at Ship Recycling Facility (SRF). Now as everything is confirmed by government agencies, the ship is relocated to Alang-Sosiya anchorage for further dispensation. Finally, SRF is assigned to ship.

Arrival of Ship at Ship Recycling Facility

As Master is already inculcated by Port officer, a master will have a list of actions to be ended. This will take account of stopping engines, closing the fuel tanks, and leaving with the crew. Once the ship is left, it is secured in its position by wire-ropes, and chain connected with winches anchor throughout the dismantling process. Next, to this, fire hose and other firefighting equipment are set up. Vessels are tested again for the gas-free environment, Oil tanks are marked, high-pressure containers and connecting pipes are depressurized, and fire-extinguishers and inert gases containing CO2 are marked. At last, we do blasting and de-blasting for maintenance of stability. It takes the HSE process into consideration as well.

Decontamination

All the activities for decontamination, done parallel or serial, are under a full consideration of HSE Measures. All the remaining Hazardous Materials are again verified and removed. Gases are removed under the process of gas freeing and tanks are cleaned. Potential Hazards and Hazardous materials are identified and managed through appropriate labeling for areas containing the same. It may be possible that some materials which are not listed in the inventory of Hazardous Material may seem suspicious. If such materials are identified by Workers or Supervisors, they are required to inform the HSE department. HSE Department authenticates whether material found suspicious is hazardous or not according to the IHM guidelines. Non-Hazardous material also makes recycling inefficient and difficult. Hence, residues of cargo tanks, remaining fuel oils and remaining waste, whether hazardous or nonhazardous, are removed. Risk Assessment affects the decision of placement of isolated removal areas and selection of PPE. We do check for all confined spaces and safe for entry conditions. Provision of oil spill kits onboard as well as offshore during beaching and recycling is assured in this stage. Finally, after the sequence of checks and removal steps, the certificate for safe hot working is issued which consents further recycling process.

Dismantling of Ship

3 arrangements are done known as - Primary, Secondary and Backyard cutting

  • Essential primary stage: Block cutting - Blocks are sliced at the ship through gas cutting lights and afterward lifted by the particular cranes and cut down with safety.
  • Secondary Stage: These blocks are assessed and if some combustible material is found, it is expelled or washed away on oily washing territory and after that sliced to a truck size blocks.
  • Back yard Cutting: These truck measure blocks are moved to the backyard through cranes and more dumber trucks where these blocks are additionally sliced to saleable size goods i.e scrap and re-rollable products. The saleable Machinery and other non-ferrous material are kept at the assigned stockpiling zone at SRF.
  • Primary and Secondary level cutting procedures are conducted. Clean blocks and equipment are loaded then. For the dedicated area on shoreline facility, special provisions are provided for cleaning and cutting of oily blocks and machinery. The third level of cutting i.e. backyard cutting is managed in the backyard which includes only material cleaning.

Material Management

For management, materials are required to be scrutinized. For this, all the materials are sorted and then ghettoized. Waste materials are isolated and labeled for a clear idea of waste management. In waste management, such waste materials are stored and loaded to a dedicated area from where they are directly disposed of. As all scrap materials are not useless. There may be some valuable material which may be useful in some other industries as a raw material. Materials like raw components and equipment are traded and managed moreover. We have separate waste management rooms, bilge water to a bilge water tank, non-recyclable waste to GEPIL. Management of asbestos as well.

Finalization of the recycling process
